DEBUNKING THE MYTHS OF SELF-CARE

Over the past years, self-care turned into a marketing buzzword. In a world where mothers already feel over-pressured, it has become yet another chore to keep up with. And with the endless trends and products everywhere you look, the idea of caring for oneself can ironically make one feel burned out.

This defeats the true purpose of self-care.

As your fellow intuitive moms, we don’t want you to see self-care as a chore. We need to step back and understand what self-care really is. We are here to advocate for a more inclusive, achievable, and realistic self-care for moms around the world.

So, what really is SELF-CARE?

Self-care is defined as:

“The practice of preserving or improving one’s own health.” or “The practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.”

To understand and rule out all the wrong notions about it, let’s address some of the major myths that surround self-care.

Myth #1: Self-care requires resources you don’t have; it is expensive

The Truth: We often view self-care as a luxury that many of us have neither the time nor the money to avail. The truth is that self-care is as simple as going for a walk, having a warm bath, or calling a friend. While buying expensive shoes or treating yourself to a spa might feel great, it’s not the only way you can do to care for your health and wellbeing.

Myth #2: Self-care is only for a chosen few

The Truth: Self-care doesn’t only cater to a specific group. Regardless of one’s ethnicity, beliefs, gender, social status, age, or ability, we all share the right to practice self-care and ensure that we are living a healthy and balanced life.

Myth #3: Self-care is selfish

The Truth: Self-care directly means taking care of yourself, which is vital for your health and well-being. It’s not selfish to fulfill your needs, as that will be the key in your pursuit of a more purposeful existence.

The main difference between self-care and selfishness is that selfishness excludes others, whereas self-care does not.

Myth #4: Self-care is just relaxing

The Truth: Self-care also includes taking care of your physical wellness through exercise, setting boundaries with yourself and others, practical spending so that you can save money for your future, or knowing yourself deeper.

Myth #5: Self-care is something you can buy

The Truth: For the past decade, self-care has become a commercial venture. Over time,  businesses became more concerned with gaining profit than focusing on the health of an individual. It’s important to note that self-care is a state of mind and approach to life. There are various options for self-care that do not require monetary payment. This can include: taking a walk outside; calling up a friend or a family member to talk; pursuing a creative project that brings you fulfillment and that depends on your need and preference.

Authentic self-care involves making a conscious ad consistent effort to build a life

you don’t need to escape from.

TAKEAWAY:

Why is it so difficult to make time for ourselves when we somehow manage to make time for everyone and everything else?

This is probably the biggest question that moms face. With everything on our plate, taking care of ourselves, which is a key part of a healthy, fulfilling life, inevitably falls to the bottom of our to-do list.  The unrealistic expectations that are wrongly attached to self-care also impede us from consciously protecting our well-being.

But self-care doesn’t have to be expensive, unrealistic, complicated, or time-consuming. As moms, we don’t really have enough time for a long and relaxing bubble bath, and that’s totally fine.

But just by showing up and trying to juggle all of the responsibilities that come with being a parent, especially during this unprecedented time, earns you some applause. For that, You deserve to take care of yourself too!

Nourishing yourself in a way that helps you blossom in the direction you want to go is attainable, and you are worth the effort.
